Backstory

Carric Alexis Lenormant was born the middle of five children:

  • Aelar Jean Lenormant (he/him, 71)
  • Dara-Faral Nelly Lenormant (she/her, 63)
  • Carric Alexis Lenormant
  • Roland Heian Lenormant (he/him, 49)
  • Lise Marie Lenormant (she/her, 37)

Their parents, Florianne Emilia Lenormant (half-elf, she/her, 114) and Jean-ClaudeNaal Vasseur (elf, he/him, 270), are the current heads of the Lenormant family. A human/elf clan dating back centuries from the union of a human hero and an elven sorcerer, they are renowned for producing powerful sorcerers. Many have served in the king’s court, or have forged their own legends.

Unfortunately for Carric, only Dara-Faral and Roland showed signs of sorcerous power. Leading them to be the ones showered with power and tutelage. Aelar ran away over a decade ago and allegedly became a hero in a far off land. Lise was called to a higher purpose and left for a monastery before coming of age. Carric was pushed into work in tax administration for the crown, a way to busy himself as an “unmagical” member of the family. For two decades, that was his lot, managing tax collectors and hearing disputes not fit for a judge. A monotonous career, elven-blooded or not.

Life changed for Carric 4 years ago, the result of some strange ritual he witnessed. A disquiet came over him that night, something compelling him to head toward the basement. The sorcerous side of the family did their studies there. As he approached the door to Dara-Faral’s study, it was clear a ritual of some sort was in progress. Before he could even knock, the door flew open. A flurry of emotions and magic flew over him: hate, fear, agony, rage. His body moved in strange ways, he clearly wasn’t on the ground. All Carric could see was the visage of a fox, inches from his face, its face carrying the same emotions flooding his mind. Then nothing.

Later, Carric would know he now wore the face of that fox. His body was coated in scars that ached when his sorcerous siblings approached. The Lenormants refused to explain what happened that night. A lycanthrope hidden in the bloodline, scandalous as that would be, was all that left their lips. He would have to stay inside the basement, the servants tending to him carefully managed to not let the shame known.

Several bitter seasons followed, though time meant little without the sun or stars. He was never getting out. There was a farcical play at “curing” him, but that ended quickly. As did all his family’s visits. But once, Carric awoke to the door open, a figure standing there barely visible. “You shouldn’t suffer for what the Lenormant’s have done. Go. Run fast and far and they won’t try to catch you.” They fled immediately into darkness. Carric chased to no avail, opting instead to follow the stranger's advice before the servants realized what happened. Fast and far away from home.

The role of a vagrant was Carric’s best option, his full name now a hindrance. Beastkin were not unknown, but he had to play coy about his origins. Odd labors and scaring away violent drunks were his new career. But the emotions from that miserable night still stirred. He could fall into a rage, with effort, gaining strength he never knew. He began to see a new path: Alear did it, why not him? He’d make his own legend.

(From Percy) Thoughts During Character Creation:

Who are you?

List a handful of things about your character, such as 3 one or two word traits to guide your RP, what do they value, what are their fears? What can cause you complications in RP (somewhat xenophobic? a pacifist? and other things that might cause complications) Keep them basic and easy to remember as an RP guide, and expect your values, thoughts, and complications to change over the course of the game!

Holds nobles and their bloodlines in great disdain.

Can act like a noble, but is typically more crass and lowbrow.

Is more aware of state financials and taxes then he ever wanted to know.

Sympathetic to those dealing with debts to the state/nobles, he’s seen more than his fill of that.

Not used to the senses of a beast, loud noises and strong smells are disorienting.

Doesn’t want to see his family again, but still wants answers.

Who do you know?

No one is truly an island, everyone has connections, no matter how weak, how frayed, or hostile.

The Vasseurs. Carric doesn’t really know any of them outside of his father but they shouldn’t have any issues with him.

Who out there likes you? Who do you like?

Parents? Friends? Try to think of who your character has relied on in the past, or could in the future, who do you want to share successes with? Who would you help if they were in need? Ideally, "the other party members" will be included in that list over time, but this is for your per-existing connections to the world.

His father Jean-Claude,Naal, or maybe Aelar or Lise if he ever ran into them again.

The owner of the Alehouse near the edge of town, a woman who inherited it from her deceased husband. Carric ended up working for her after he broke up what could have been an all-out brawl on his own.

Who out there has it out for you? Who are you out for?

Parents? Rivals? Have you pissed anybody off? Who may have pissed you off? This could be an unknown figure who stole your family's ancestral sword, it could be your childhood rival who found success at your cost, maybe it's the local Lord who used backhanded tactics to claim your family home, or are you hunted by a strange cult as a child of some prophecy?

The Lenormants. With the exception of Aelar and Lise (neither of whom he has seen in many years) and perhaps the person that set him free?

There are at least a few folk out there bitter about him during his time serving the state. Though with a new face they may not realize it’s him…

What, if any Organizations are your part of, interested in, or are interested in you?

While individual connections are important, also think about what larger groups you may be connected to? A church, a town, a guild? You can see the Introduction section for preexisting guilds and organizations, but it's encouraged to work with me to make something!

He still holds connections within the administrative state of _____. It may take some effort to rebuild though (new face and all).

The town of _____ that Carric resided in prior to adventuring. He’s worked odd jobs for plenty of them.

Why are you here?

Adventuring is hard, it's dangerous, it takes you away from home. So, why are you doing it? Fortune? Fame? Thrill seeking, sent on a mission? this doesn't need to be complex, just what has driven you out of a "normal" life to this?

By necessity. But now he wants to tread a similar path as his elder brother did: cast aside his family name and forge his own legend.
